Comic Underwear

Comic Underwear

Behind the Scenes:

Here’s a peek at my creative process this time. Until a few hours before deadline, the comic had a totally different look and more dialogue:

I liked the basic gag. In fact, I thought it might make a good fridge magnet to sell at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con. But I decided the dialogue needed to be snappier. (When it comes to products, the fewer words the better. More dialogue often equals fewer sales.)

So I quickly rewrote the gag. But then I realized that the art—which frankly wasn’t a great fit for the original dialogue—was even more out of sync the with new dialogue. So, I combed through my art inventory and came up with art to replace it.

I think it’s a better fit. But, honestly, I never know for sure…until I hear from readers. Or I sell a big bunch of fridge magnets.   —John Lustig
