Let us never forget All gave some BUT; SOME GAVE ALL.
Here in flyover country I have occasion to visit small town cemeteries on Memorial/Veterans Day’s. Often I come across civil war gravestones with more than dates of birth and death. Some are simple. GAR. Some have more information about unit and/or wounded at such and such battle. This year I decided to look up the 57th Pennsylvania Volunteers. An infantry regiment.
2 medal of honor recipients, and in total:
The regiment lost a total of 378 men during service; 12 officers and 149 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, 217 enlisted men died of disease.
I’m far from an expert on the Civil War, but I do know that many regiments on both sides had staggering losses. And often the deaths came from infected wounds or disease. I think that was the norm for most armies until World War II.
